Pacific Media Finds Larger Flat Panel TVs Boost Average Prices in October; Panasonic Holds Onto #1 Position, but Pioneer Closes the Gap

Menlo Park, Calif. (PRWEB) December 19, 2005

Pacific Media Associates (PMA), the global market information experts on large-screen displays, reports that unit sales for flat panel televisions and business displays in North America rose 15% in October, but that revenues increased by a greater margin of 18%. Average street price rose by 3% to $ 2,840 for the period, as described in the company’s Flat Panel Display Tracking Service which provides true sell-through data on unit sales, prices, and inventories, based on a sample of retailers and resellers.

“In spite of falling prices for individual models, the average selling price for flat panel TVs actually went up in October. The rise in the overall street price was caused by a shift in the product mix in October, as sales increased for larger and more expensive models. Except for the Panasonic line, prices declined for nearly every top-selling model in October,” according to Pacific Media Vice President Rosemary Abowd. “The 50-to-55-inch category gained three unit share points; nearly one in five panels sold this month were 50-inch plasma models.

“Higher resolution products gained market share in October. Wide XGA models gained 4 points of unit market share, while EDTV models lost 5 share points and now represent only 10% of the total market, down from 30% in the first half of 2005.”

Panasonic remains #1 both in unit sales and revenues. But Pioneer gained 8 unit share points and 10 revenue share points, capturing 17% unit market share — nearly double September’s unit share — on strong sales for the new PRO-1130HD.

Sony’s new 40″ Bravia LCD TV (KDL-V40XBR1) was the top-selling model for the month, helping Sony hold onto the #2 spot in unit market share and #3 position in revenue share.
