“Wave Season” Was Like A “Tsunami”

While other segments of the economy may just be starting their recovery, the cruise industry continues to lead the way in leisure travel. All of the major cruise lines including Royal Caribbean, Celebrity Cruises, Carnival Cruises and Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) have recently issued upbeat reports and some national online cruise retailers like Direct Line Cruises, Inc. have experienced record sales over the past year.

As Tom Coiro, Vice President and co-founder of Direct Line Cruises confirms, “The 2010 ‘wave season’ [January – March] was our strongest ever. In fact, we booked 60% more cabins in the first three months of 2010 than we did during that same period in 2009”. Tom further explains that the momentum in the cruise industry didn’t just start a few months ago. “Our website (http://www.DirectLineCruises.com) has averaged nearly 10,000 ‘hits’ a day over the past year and we’ve done a record number of bookings for 24 consecutive semi-monthly periods now. That’s the longest winning streak in our 15-year history.”

What accounts for all of this record-breaking activity at a time when some other businesses are still showing lingering signs of recession? According to Tom, “People who work for a living will always look forward to taking a vacation and, thankfully, over 90% of the working population still have their jobs. So, as always, they look to get the ‘most bang for the buck’ from their hard-earned vacation dollars and that’s where cruising has become the top choice for more and more people.”

How long will the positive momentum continue for Direct Line Cruises and the cruise industry? To that question, Coiro replies, “It’s hard to say but, if the cruise lines continue to innovate like they’ve done over the past few years with Celebrity Cruises Solstice class ships, Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas and the Norwegian Epic, there’s really no end in sight.”
